Surrender to God

The working of the Universe and Life are a great mystery to all of us. We are a part of the life that flows ceaselessly in the Universe and we are all a part of the Universe too. We are subject to all the laws of the Universe. Every part of the creation – from the amoeba to the ant, from the life in the egg to the elephant, from a blade of grass to the green forests, from monkey to man – we all submit to the laws of creation and nature. When we do not understand the laws and resist the events around us and the things that happen to us, we create stress for ourselves and make our lives difficult.  We feel we have created our own power, position and status in life and hence we govern and control all the happenings around us. We forget that our lives are intertwined with so many other people, places and events and we cannot steer things to happen the way we want. Unless and until we have surrender to God, we will not be able to understand the working of creation and be able to let go our ego and need to control.

One of the most bittersweet moments of life comes to us when we realise that we do not have everything under our control; that is difficult to figure out what is going on in our lives and why things happen. There is a crushing period in our lives when we understand that our jobs, our wealth,  our children, wife ,family , friends,  relatives, power or prestige do not give us the depth of satisfaction, peace or happiness in life. Then comes the realisation that there is something beyond all this which will give us what we seek – peace and love, which is deep abiding love for God and surrender unto Him.

Surrendering to God means that we submit ourselves to the Will of God. We accept that whatever happens is the will of God and we are mere instruments performing work. We do our duties sincerely,  keeping in mind the name of God and His Light. There is no resistance in us or questions or any room for doubt about the happenings or conditions in our life.  When we permit the free flow of light or will of God in ourselves, that loving energy cleanses and purifies us. It gives us knowledge, wisdom and strength to accept and do the work allotted to us to perfection possible by us. All the negative qualities in us are slowly wiped out. We overcome them and we are filled with love , peace and bliss of God.

When we live in surrender, we do not carry the weight of our ego, likes, dislikes and vices. Hence we are able to move swiftly with the current of the happenings and are not disturbed by any turmoil or disturbances around us.  We are completely obedient to the words of Guru and God. When we empty ourselves of our desires and selfishness, we are able to walk swiftly right behind Guru and God. Surrender to God brings about an inner transformation of self which leads us to our inner divinity.

Sri Krishna speaks of Surrender in the Bhagwad Geeta. When we think only and only of Sri Krishna and do all our work in full surrender to Him, and offer our work and life to Him and accept whatever results of work  we get as His blessings, we will attain His Grace and His Feet. Great devotees like Akrura, Draupadi, Hanuman, Dhruva, Prahlad and others have shown us the way of surrender to God and the grace which flows due to the surrender. The devotee is made capable of performing extraordinary tasks and is always loved and protected by Divinity. Those of us who aspire to perform great feats for the welfare of humanity must cultivate surrender and bhakti of God. This will supercharge and enable us to achieve astounding deeds. Then God performs through us and we become perfect instruments of His peace and action.
