How we make ourselves miserable

The Supreme Power which is Effulgence, Intelligence, Love, Compassion, Understanding, Loyal and Faithful created out of Itself zillions of sparks. Thus was born Creation and Nature. Every part of the Universe with its teeming life and non life forms are reflections of the Huge Intelligence and Love of God. The Supreme Intelligence has incorporated within all of Its Creation, the essential qualities necessary for the existence and growth of Its Creation.  God being Perfection has created Perfection. Every part of Creation is perfect in itself.  Man is one of the Supreme Creations of God created to grow and rise to the Highest Levels of Perfection possible. Then why is it that we are always miserable?

We are miserable because we make ourselves miserable. We have been given unique gifts which help us to live well and be happy. Yet we do not acknowledge what we have. We look at others and see what they have and bemoan that we do not have those things. And make ourselves miserable.

God- the Supreme Planner has mapped out for all the living creatures certain qualities which sets them apart and makes them perfect in what they are.  A weaver bird has the ability to create a waterproof nest, snugly woven from twigs and leaves. This nest is haven for the bird and its mate and family. They live here safe and secure. Now what if this bird neglected its gift of weaving homes and envied the fish its ability to swim in water and made itself miserable.... ?

The crane is tall, thin and able to stand on one foot in water and focus wholly on the fish in the water. Its concentration is excellent and it balances standing on one foot in the water without any movement. At the right moment, it bends its neck and snaps the fish in the water with its beak. What if the crane bemoaned its light thin body and wanted the height and weight of the ostrich.... ?

When we think of the above examples we laugh because we know that Nature has given the gift of weaving to the weaver bird to protect its babies and the crane is made light and thin so that it can balance in water to catch its food. When we look further, we see that Nature’s planning for every living creature is faultless. Each creature is given a colour, form or shape or a living environment which helps it to survive and hunt for food. Each being is gifted with unique qualities. And so is man.

Man has been gifted with five senses, plus the sixth sense, intelligence and discernment. He is given the ability to adapt, improvise and improve. He has used all his gifts well but has also allowed the vices of anger, greed, jealousy, lust, attachment and pride to overpower him. As a result, he makes himself miserable. He has exploited and overused the gifts of nature, polluted the environment and has shattered his inner self with all sorts of vices. His mind controls him. Not his intelligence or discernment.  His need to stand out apart and be unique drives him to actions which are extremely questionable and destructive.

We do not appreciate the body, strength, intelligence and other gifts given to us. We look at others and wonder why our nose is not roman in shape, or skin is not cream and roses, or breast and hips not shaped like the popular actress on the television or why our biceps and height are not like the popular hero of Hollywood. We are like the swan wanting to become like the peacock without realising that what we are given are special to us and made just for us.

We must not allow our mind to make us miserable by making comparisons with others. Let us protect ourselves from pride and jealousy. Let us be thankful for what we have.  We must realise that we are a spark of Divinity and that we are journeying back home to God. We must do the SitaRam mantra daily. The divine vibrations of the mantra will calm our mind and help us get rid of our vices slowly. It will clear our clouded intelligence and discriminative power. When our mind screams at us to compare ourselves with others and get depressed, we will be able to detach ourselves from our mind and calmly do the right thing. We are the Atman which is bliss. Let us not make ourselves miserable and live in spiritual poverty.
